A spoofing scam involving police phone numbers has spread to Suffolk County.
The Suffolk Police Department says scammers are using software that allows the caller ID to show legitimate Suffolk police phone numbers, even though they're not. The callers demand money or threaten to arrest the victim.
Nassau police warned of a similar scam affecting its department last week.
Any potential victims are advised to ask for the caller's name and number and tell them you'll call back after you verify their identity. Or you can hang up and dial 911.
