Police say a man has been arrested for driving while intoxicated in a crash that seriously injured a police officer in Yaphank.
According to police, a marked Suffolk County police vehicle was parked in the roadway blocking traffic due to an earlier police investigation at the intersection of William Floyd Parkway and Yaphank Woods Boulevard at approximately 12 a.m.
Police say a police officer was in the roadway handling traffic control when a Chevrolet pickup truck traveling southbound on William Floyd Parkway struck the rear of a GMC Yukon, then struck the police vehicle. The force of the impact caused the GMC to strike the police officer.
The driver of the Chevrolet, William Petersohn, and the police officer were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition.
The police officer is in a medically induced coma after suffering a severe brain injury. Police have not released his name but say he's 35 years old, married and has children. He has been an officer for three years.
Police say what helped save the officer’s life was the collaboration between the volunteer firefighters who showed up to the scene, the medevac who airlifted him to the hospital and the doctors and nurses at Stony Brook who quickly worked to stop the bleeding in his brain.
The officer is currently in ICU on a ventilator at Stony Brook University Hospital.
Police say Petersohn is in serious condition. He has been charged with DWI and will be arranged at a later date.
