Police: Oceanside teen stabbed in brawl as dozens watched, recorded incident
Police say upward to 70 people witnessed a brawl in Oceanside Monday that led to the stabbing death of 16-year-old Khassen Morris.
Police say the incident took place at a strip mall on Brower Avenue – a place known as an after-school hangout for students.
Detectives say the fight may have been over a girl Morris knew and her ex-boyfriend.
Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick says that Morris “had the knowledge” that he might get into a fist fight with the individual.
Keyanna Morris, the victim’s sister, told News 12 that the girl was trying to make her ex-boyfriend jealous by having Morris walk her home.
During the incident, Khassen Morris was stabbed in the chest and died on the way to the hospital. Several other teens were injured in the fight, including an 18-year-old whose arm was broken.
Police say they are interviewing witnesses and may be close to making arrests. Homicide detectives added that they were stunned that so many kids watched and were taking cellphone video of the incident.
“If you are not part or parcel to the murder of Khassen Morris, now is the time to get in touch with us and let us know who did this and why,” says Fitzpatrick. “…You need to get out in front of this. After I put handcuffs on you is not going to be the time for me to be helpful to you.”
A GoFundMe in support of Morris’ family is already approaching $10,000.
