Police arrested three suspects Friday in connection to a string of armed bank robberies in Nassau County.
Authorities say Victoria Wiechow and Monore Nash, both of Calverton, and David Freeland, of Schenectady, N.Y., held up three banks in less than three hours.
According to investigators, the crime spree began when the suspects robbed a Washington Mutual bank in Wantagh at around 3:30 p.m. About an hour later, detectives say the trio held up a Capital One bank in East Meadow before moving on to a TD Bank in Massapequa.
Eyewitnesses say the suspects' getaway vehicle jumped the curb on Lafayette Avenue in Massapequa and plowed into a fence before coming to a standstill. At that point, Freeland dived into the Massapequa River and tried to make an escape, witnesses say.
Cynthia Nakashian, of Massapequa, says her husband spotted a man in the water and took out a jet ski into the river, where he found Freeland clinging to the side of a boat.
"He did not want to go quietly," Nakashian says. "He resisted my husband."
The three suspects will be arraigned Sunday on three counts each of first-degree robbery and criminal use of a firearm.
