A house fire in Nassau County Tuesday morning led to the discovery of animal torture.

Flames broke out around 10 a.m. in the kitchen of a home at 67 Mist Lane in Westbury, officials say.

Once fire crews extinguished the flames, Nassau police officers found several crates with multiple chickens in the backyard of the residence.

Victor Xu, 44, a resident of the home, was arrested at the scene without incident.

The Humane Society and Nassau SPCA were notified and the animals were safely removed from the property.

Xu is set to be charged with 66 counts of torturing or injuring animals/failure to provide sustenance when he is arraigned next month.

There were no injuries in the fire and the cause is under investigation by the Nassau Fire Marshal.
