A mother and her three daughters were injured in what police say was a drunk driving crash in Farmingville Friday.
The incident happened after 5 p.m. on Country Road 83.
Police say Erika Bautista was driving with her 10-, 8- and 4-year-old daughters when their car became disabled in the right lane, near South Bicycle Path.
Investigators say Bautista's vehicle was rear-ended by a Jeep driven by Chris Montpetit¸ of Shirley.
Bautista and her youngest daughters were seriously injured. The 10-year-old girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
All four were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Montpetit was arrested and charged with DWI, and prosecutors say more charges could be filed.
Marge Lee, of the anti-drunk driving group DEDICATEDD, says she's seen far too many crashes over the years, but this one is especially painful, because young children were hurt.
"This didn't have to happen. It's an alleged drunk driving crash, I understand that. But, if someone didn't drink, this family would not have been impacted, would not have been devastated," Lee says.
Montpetit appeared before a judge by video link. He was given supervised release with a monitoring device and did not have to post any bail.
