Freeport police reunited with around 500 fourth grade students Wednesday for the village's "Adopt-a-Cop" program.
The officers visit the students throughout the school year to boost trust and communication with police.
It's part of an effort to encourage children to stay away from drugs, gangs and violence.
"This is a great way for our officers to have a positive interaction with the kids in our community," says Freeport Police Chief Michael Smith.
Local and county officers had patrol vehicles, dive squads and K-9 units on full display for students to learn about.
