A Maryland man who jumped a fence and ran on to the field without permission at the T20 Cricket World Cup in Nassau County was arrested on Saturday.
Police say 31-year-old Ashwin Godker ran toward the players after making it on to the field during a “test match” in Eisenhower Park. He was quickly arrested, and no one was hurt.
Officials were on high alert at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium at Eisenhower Park despite no matches scheduled for Sunday.
Both Nassau police and federal law enforcement joined forces to protect fans and stay ahead of any potential threats. Additionally, a mobile command was also set up near the 34,000-seat stadium. Everyone who enters the stadium is screened.
The park will remain closed to the public apart from one golf course during cricket games.
Despite Saturday's arrest, many fans say they feel safe. Some fans told News 12 that they were disappointed to hear about the incident.
"Cricket is new for some people in the Unites States, it is played mostly in Asia. People who don't know the sport should respect the sport even though it's not their game. Even if they don't respect it, they have to respect the rules and the game,” said Madiha Rebman.
Authorities say Godker was charged with criminal trespassing.
Preparations were underway for Monday's first official matchup at the stadium. Fans told News 12 they cannot wait for next weekend's game between the sport's biggest rivals - India and Pakistan.
