Suffolk County police are investigating break-ins into several cars over the weekend in both the Bay Shore and Brentwood communities.
"We've got to be alerted of our surroundings now," said Iliana Fuentes, who lives in Bay Shore.
On Friday morning, Fuentes and Fany Sorto woke up to a mess in several of their cars in their driveway.
"They went into my husband's car, he took everything out of the glovebox. He left a mess all over the passenger seat and the floor as well," Sorto said.
Not much was taken from the cars. Fuentes says it was just some change and a personalized necklace her mother gave her. She says the person who broke into their cars did go through her wallet.
"He took the cards out, but didn't take any of them just threw them around the car," Fuentes said.
Fuentes says their surveillance cameras caught the person walk up into their driveway and go through their vehicles one by one. They say the person even lifted the door handles on Sorto's locked car twice. The other cars did have their doors unlocked.
Fuentes says the person was there for nine minutes.
"We weren't sure if he was armed or not. He felt so confident, taking his time," she said.
It wasn't just Fuentes and Sortos' cars. Fuentes says the person in the video went through their neighbors' cars on Chestnut Street as well.
"He took their MacBook, their clothes. From the front house, he took their work phone," Fuentes said.
Suffolk County police confirmed they received two reports of someone who opened vehicles in that area and stole change and a cellphone.
Also, overnight Friday, Suffolk County police say they received several reports of broken windows on Fairfield Circle in Brentwood.
Randy Hernandez says his car was one that was hit. He told News 12 he got a fraud alert overnight, but didn't know what happened until he went to the gym around 5 a.m.
"Somebody just broke my window, opened everything and grabbed my wallet and a lot of transactions," Hernandez said.
He says he saw four other cars in his complex that had their windows broken as well.
Suffolk County police responded to both neighborhoods, but many are worried and paying more attention.
"It's crazy. Neighbors are really concerned about what's going on," Hernandez said.
Suffolk County police always remind people to lock their cars when they leave them.
It was not clear as of Sunday night if the incidents were connected.
Suffolk County police ask anyone with any information about the incidents to call 1-800-220-TIPS.
