A man smashed the rear window of a car stopped at a red light in North New Hyde Park and stole an Apple Watch, police say.
They say a man bought the Apple Watch at Roosevelt Field Mall. The watch was stolen Saturday evening out of the man's car, around 9 miles from the mall in the vicinity of Lakeville Road and Fairfield Lane.
Police say a late model gray Kia SUV stopped behind the victim's vehicle. They say the suspect then used a center punch tool to break the rear window.
A camera on the car recorded the whole incident.
It is unclear how the thief knew a bag with the device was in the car.
Police are working to determine if the victim was followed from the mall.
"The victim doesn't believe he was followed, he doesn't think he was followed, but we'll go back," Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder says. "We'll pull all the video."
Once the man removed the bag, he got back in his car driven by an unknown female subject. They then fled eastbound on Evergreen Avenue.
This is just one in a string of recent crimes connected to the Roosevelt Field Mall. In recent months, police say cash and expensive merchandise has been stolen, a person was slashed, and a man exposed himself and chased two women.
Some Long Islanders feel like more security is still needed at the mall.
"If there were more police, I think it would probably be a lot safer..," says Felice Stein, of Carle Place. "I would feel a lot safer. They don't have enough people walking around the mall."
Nassau County police say there is a heightened police presence.
