Police say a hit-and-run in Bellport led to the arrest of a man wanted on drug and sex trafficking charges.
Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron says 27-year-old Rakeem Holland was selling drugs to young women, and then forcing them into prostitution to pay off their debts.
"He was providing them heroin and crack, initially for free, but his motives were much more sinister," Cameron says. "He wanted them to get addicted to the drugs, and then would ask for payback in that he would prostitute them out."
Police say they launched an investigation in March after a missing persons case was filed at the 3rd Precinct. A detective noticed the case was part of a pattern.
"He noticed more than one missing person missing under similar circumstances and he was able to utilize, from his vast experience as a detective, that it was more than just a simple missing persons case, that it could potentially involve human trafficking," says Cameron.
Detectives say Holland advertised the women for sex online and that the prostitution took place at an undisclosed hotel.
Holland was arrested Sunday after police say the BMW that he was riding in sped away from police and crashed. Police say he then tried to flee on foot, but was apprehended.
Officers say two loaded guns were found in the car, including one that had been reported stolen.
A woman at Holland's home on Bellport Avenue had no comment about his arrest.
Holland has 42 prior arrests. He now faces several felony charges including, sex trafficking and promoting prostitution.
