A man was rescued Monday after he fell into a collapsed cesspool in North Bay Shore, Suffolk police say.
Police say an 88-year-old man was doing yard work in his backyard on Bancroft Road, when a cesspool collapsed, creating a sinkhole.
He fell into the hole, and held his head above the cesspool's content, using an electrical cord, police say. He was located a short time later by his wife, who called 911.
Officers responded to the scene and were able to use an emergency life ring to keep the man afloat.
He was pulled from the hole and transported to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
