A man was instantly killed when a tire hit his vehicle while on the westbound Sunrise Highway Thursday afternoon, Suffolk police say.
That tire then hit another car, but the two people inside weren't injured.
The incident happened around 2:15 p.m. near Falmouth Road.
Police identified the victim as David Dorazio, 60, of Lindenhurst.
The state Department of Transportation says the tire came from a tractor-trailer that was traveling on Route 231. However, police said in a news conference that they don't know where that tire came from.
Sgt. Detective David Cullen asked for the public’s help in finding out where the tire came from.
Westbound Sunrise Highway and the service road were shut down for hours, but have since reopened.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
