Armored vehicles and the Nassau SWAT team descended on an Elmont home Monday afternoon and took into custody a man who police say had fired gunshots in his yard.
Officers walked with guns drawn, using an armored vehicle as a shield. Eventually, the team approached a home on Clay Street. Without incident, a man surrendered and was placed in handcuffs and ushered away.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder declined to identify the man who surrendered, but authorities say it was a 50-year-old resident of the house. Ryder says Nassau police were first tipped off Sunday by a neighbor who is a high-ranking member of the NYPD.
Ryder says the city deputy chief reported that a neighbor fired rounds from what he believed to be an assault rifle into the ground of his backyard.
A crime scene search unit remained on scene through Monday evening. Detectives removed from the home evidence boxes that appeared to weapons and ammunition.
A woman who lives next door says the apprehended man has been a neighbor for 15 years. She called him a good guy who's "a little paranoid."
Ryder says the man has two prior arrests, including a drug charge that prohibits him from owning certain weapons.
Police say the man was in custody, but it was unclear whether he would formally face charges.
