A Sag Harbor man is facing multiple charges after police say he dragged an East Hampton police officer with his vehicle and then crashed in Montauk.
It happened around 4:45 a.m Saturday. East Hampton police say the officer approached a group of people who appeared to be intoxicated as they got into a 2001 GMC in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven on Montauk Highway in Montauk.
The officer spoke to the man behind the wheel, identified as 36-year-old Andrew Hellman, of Sag Harbor. Hellman appeared to be intoxicated, police say.
That's when Hellman put the vehicle in drive, and the officer attempted to prevent him from taking off. Police say the officer was dragged for several feet as  Hellman sped off.
The officer was thrown from the vehicle. Police say Hellman then headed west on Montauk Highway at an unsafe speed.
He eventually lost control, and the vehicle overturned, police say. The driver and passengers were extracted from the vehicle.
The officer was treated for his injuries at Southampton Hospital and has since been released.
Hellman was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
A passenger in the car, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Metz, of East Hampton, was also charged with possession of marijuana.
Police say Hellman was arraigned Sunday in East Hampton Town Justice Court, and was ordered held on $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond.
