Weston police are looking for a suspicious man who approached a young girl Wednesday. It happened at 3:45 p.m. on Weston Woods Way. Police say a young girl got off the school bus and stopped at her mailbox to check for deliveries. They say a black Nissan Pathfinder, an older model with out-of-state license plates, stopped and the driver attempted to talk to the girl.
The vehicle also has an orange sticker near the right rear taillight.
The man asked the girl if she wanted money and told her to get into the back seat. Police say the girl then ran toward her home, which caused the man to yell for her to come back.
"Those personal safety steps that were communicated between the parents and the child obviously worked. And they made a difference in this case, which could have been very tragic. It's a report that we're able to investigate prior to something tragic happening," said Joseph Miceli, Weston Police Department Captain.
The man is described as tall, either white or Hispanic, with dirty blonde hair. During the incident, he wore a black beanie, a gray sweater with rips, black sunglasses and a sliver watch on his right wrist.
Officers canvassed the area but did not find the man. A potential match of the vehicle was seen by a security camera in the neighborhood.
As a result of the incident, police say they will be on alert and visible during school bus operations.
"Our SROs are providing information inside the schools. We have met with management at the bus garage. The bus drivers are aware. We've spoken with the post office, and we're really doing a thorough and comprehensive investigation to learn more about this potential suspect and what we can do," Miceli said.
People are asked to call 911 to report any suspicious incidents as soon as it safe to do so.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Mogollon at 203-222-2639 or via email at jmogollon@westonpolice.com.
