Police say a man and two dogs were shot before the Yaphank house in which they were staying was torched.
The incident occurred at 116 Long Island Ave. around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Detectives say a suspect shot a man who was staying at a friend's house and then targeted the dogs. They say the shooter then set the house on fire and took off.
The victim, who loved ones at the scene say is 27 years old, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and is expected to recover.
One of the dogs, a Pomeranian, died at the scene. The other, a lab mix, was taken to a local vet for treatment.
