A Hempstead man attempted to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry Saturday from the Macy’s inside Roosevelt Field Mall, police say.
News 12 is told 25-year-old Joshua Wilson, of Hempstead, came into the store with a baseball bat.
Officials say he ran to the jewelry counter and swung his bat, shattering the display cases in an attempt to steal the jewelry.
Police say Wilson fled and was caught and arrested around 4 p.m. on Clinton Avenue.
The sound caused by the shattering glass sent a swarm of shoppers running inside the mall.
Wilson was arraigned before a judge on Sunday.
He is charged with attempted robbery, criminal mischief, attempted grand larceny and criminal possession of a weapon.
