A man is accused of sexually abusing a teen he was transporting to school.
Jose Amaya, 56, allegedly had inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old girl he was hired to drive to and from school, according to police. They say the alleged sexual abuse from the self-employed driver happened on multiple occasions. Amaya had been hired by the girls mother.
According to court documents, the alleged inappropriate behavior took place last month from Dec. 12 to Dec. 22.
Court documents allege Amaya said to the victim, “I’m going to take you into my back seat” and “I’m going to take you back to my house.”
Police say the victim's parents got into a verbal altercation with Amaya after the teen told them about the incident. That is when a 911 call was made.
Amaya lives on South Franklin Street in Hempstead. People in that area were troubled when learning about the allegations.
One neighbor said, “I’m surprised if it is the person that I think it is.”
Amaya faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. He was held on $5,000 cash bail or $50,000 partially secured bond at 10%.
He is due back in court on Friday.
