Police: Father left 2 kids, ages 1 and 4, unattended in cold SUV
Police say they arrested an Islip man for leaving his two young children unattended in a parked, unlocked SUV.
The kids -- a 4-year-old girl and a 1-year old boy -- were found inside a 2012 Honda Pilot in an office parking lot at 2233 Nesconset Highway in Lake Grove.
Tom Votta says his co-worker was in the parking lot a little after 4 p.m. Wednesday when he heard a strange noise coming from one of the vehicles. He says that noise was the children trying to get someone's attention.
Police say the children were left alone for about 20 minutes while Evans was at a doctor's appointment. The vehicle was not running, and the temperature outside was in the mid-30s. The children were scared and shivering when police rescued them, according to witnesses.
Witnesses also say police found the children's father inside the office building and arrested him.
The children were released to a family member.
Evans was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He will be arraigned Thursday in Central Islip court.
