Three people were left in critical condition after a house fire that occurred around 9:30 p.m. in Elmont on Friday.
According to detectives and fire officials, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire at 490 Oakley Avenue. After entering the basement, heavy smoke and heat forced them to exit.
The Elmont Fire Department also responded with help from several surrounding fire departments. They rescued two females and a male from the burning home. A dog was killed in the fire.
"I see a lot of firemen coming out, pulling their gear out their coats and you can see the smoke coming out" said neighbor Eric Bellamonte.
Witnesses praised the heroic efforts of the responders.
"Going in there, doing what they have to do, it’s just impressive and amazing,” one witness said.
The victims were taken to local hospitals to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. They are all currently listed in critical condition.
Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital after one suffered a burn to the ear and another sustained an elbow injury.
