Police say a drunken man attacked an ambulance medical technician who was trying to help him on the way to the hospital.
Officers responded to a home on Ray Street in Freeport late Sunday night, where they say they found 29-year-old Jose Torres drunk in the front yard.
An ambulance was summoned, but police say Torres became agitated on the way to the hospital. He began to remove his safety straps and then punched the AMT in the face, police say.
Torres allegedly pushed the male AMT to the ground and continued to strike him in the head and body. The AMT used pepper spray on Torres, but he continued to put up a fight until additional officers arrived, officials say. He is also accused of resisting officers who tried to arrest him.
The AMT suffered an injury to his hand and wrist.
Torres is being charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest. He's due back in court May 18.
