A taxi driver was killed in a two-car crash early Saturday morning in Franklin Square, and the other driver involved is now facing a slew of charges.

Police say 23-year-old Duke Obule, of the Cambria Heights section of Queens, was speeding in a 2016 BMW on Hempstead Turnpike. Police say Obule's vehicle smashed into a taxi driven by a 47-year-old Elmont man near the intersection of Lincoln Road shortly before 4:30 a.m.

The collision pushed the taxi across two lanes of traffic and onto a sidewalk, and the cab became pinned against a utility pole.

The taxi driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, but News 12 is told he was the father of two young children who worked for Ollie's Taxi Service. The service runs out of a location across from the crash site.

Witnesses say the driver of the BMW was seen fleeing from the scene on foot. He was located nearby at the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Evans Avenue, and was placed under arrest.

A 20-year-old female passenger in the BMW was hospitalized with a fractured ankle. Police say Obule had left her behind in the car when he fled.

Obule is facing multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, DWI, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He is due to be arraigned in court on Sunday.

News 12 reported in 2012 that Obule was accused of using stolen credit cards to buy $14,000 worth of gift cards while he worked at Macy's in the Valley Stream mall. He was charged with third-degree grand larceny and falsifying business records at the time.
