A taxi driver in Roosevelt is accused of robbing a passenger during the early morning hours Monday.
Police say Brian Ortega, 24, picked up a passenger at around 2:30 a.m. outside a bar on Church Street in Freeport. They say Ortega drove the passenger to the vicinity of Henry Street and Nassau Road where he demanded cash and forcibly removed the passenger's wallet.
Ahmad Naderi, owner of the cab company, says Ortega passed a criminal background check before getting his cab license.
Police say this may not be the only incident and are encouraging anyone who may have been a victim of Ortega to call 1-800-244-TIPS.
Ortega was arraigned Monday afternoon on third-degree robbery charges. Bail was set at $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash.
