(04/15/08) NORTH BELLPORT - Police say the bullet that hit an 11-year-old North Bellport boy in the face Monday was meant for his father.
Jeffrey Langhorne remains in serious condition with a possible spinal injury. The bullet came through his kitchen window, hitting him in the face as he sat at the table home sick from school.
Suffolk Police say Langhorne?s father and three or four men got into an altercation outside the home Monday afternoon, and that?s when the shots were fired. They say Langhorne was armed with a machete. The altercation may have been over dogfighting, police say. Authorities removed 15 pit bulls and the remains of two dogs from the North Bellport home on Monday.
Police say there are indications of illegal breeding and dogfighting at the home. They say Langhorne knew the men involved. No arrests have been made.
Community activists are demanding a federal task force come in to help stem the violence.
