Police say a man stabbed three Southside High School students at Morgan Days Park in Rockville Centre Tuesday night.
According to police, a man in his 20s stabbed the teens while they were playing basketball at the park on Nassau Street. Police say the man was bald, had sleeve tattoos and was wearing a ski mask when he attacked the group around 6:30 p.m.
The victims sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening, officials say.
The stabbing comes one day after three Hempstead High School students were stabbed at nearby Hempstead Lake State Park, which is just 2 miles away. That incident involved a dispute between two groups of teens, officials say.
Rockville Centre Village Police Commissioner Chuck Gennario says the two incidents are unrelated. Officials have described them as coincidental and "an anomaly."
"In Hempstead Lake State Park, we think that may have been gang-affiliated," Gennario says, "We don't think our incident was gang-related at all."
Gennario says he believes the suspect in the Rockville Centre stabbings targeted one of his victims, although at this point it's not clear why.
"We don't know if there was history between them," he says. "We will arrest him. You can't pull out a knife and start slashing people"
