A group of Plainview residents is taking action against Nassau County's plan to remove hundreds of trees from along South Oyster Bay Road.

Some 200 trees are scheduled to be taken down in order to fix sidewalks where pavement has cracked. Some residents have formed the group Save Trees Over More Pavement, or STOMP, in response. STOMP member Tanya Lukasik says 400 people have signed their petition in the past three days, and they have created a Facebook group to get the word out.

STOMP claims residents were not properly notified of the tree removal plan. They are asking the county's Department of Public Works to come up with alternate plans that do not involve removing hundreds of trees.

Residents are also worried about the environmental and aesthetic impacts the removal of trees would have.

In a statement to News 12, Nassau Public Works spokesperson Michael Martino said, "Removing trees is never an easy decision and often unavoidable due to uprooted sidewalks that violate the Americans With Disabilities Act. Nassau County plants hundreds of new trees per year and plans to replant trees along South Oyster Bay Road."
