Many Long Island fire departments took a new approach this winter.
Several departments hosted contests to reward residents who cleared out their fire hydrants from the snow.
Dozens of kids were hailed as heroes on Sunday in Plainview for doing their part during the recent blizzard. One of the honorees, Jack Mayrose, cleared a hydrant firefighters needed to fight a fire a few days after the storm.
"We got the call about how it was across the street from the hydrant I had already cleared and I was hoping it wasn't anything big. We got there and the house was definitely on fire,” Jack told News 12.
“I'm happy I was able to help out and make everything a little easier and a little faster to make sure that fire got knocked out," he added.
The Plainview Fire Department held an honorary swearing-in for each of the kids.
They all walked away with a t-shirt that says 'Hydrant Hero.'
