A Plainview businessman made a virtual court appearance Tuesday on accusations of price gouging and hoarding critical protective gear.
Amardeep "Bobby" Singh made an emotional apology on YouTube earlier this month after Nassau County hit him with fines for alleged price gouging and improperly selling masks at his Warehouse Liquidation Center.
On Tuesday, Singh appeared before a federal judge, and was allowed to remain free by posting $50,000 bond and surrendering his passport.
Singh is the first person in the U.S. charged with violating the Defense Production Act, for allegedly hoarding face shields and full-body isolation suits. According to court documents, Singh also sold N95 masks from 59-99% above cost and disposable masks at a markup of over 1,300%.
Singh's attorney agreed to an interview with News 12, but wouldn't answer specific questions.
"I believe there are multiple defenses to this case and at the end, he will be found not guilty in everything that's charged here," Singh's attorney says. He also would not comment on the YouTube video in which Singh admitted to selling individual masks in Zip-Loc bags.
Singh's store will remain closed until at least May. His attorney would not comment on if Singh would continue to sell masks and other PPE when he reopens.
