Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new plans to redevelop Penn Station on Wednesday.
The governor says that Penn Station was never built to handle the amount of travelers that pass through its doors on a daily basis.
Cuomo says he wants to create a new station entirely called the Empire State Station. The $3 billion public-private partnership includes the renovation of what is currently Penn Station, a train hall at the Farley Post Office building across the street from Madison Square Garden and a way to connect the two with a modern feel.
"I believe it will be transformative for the state. It will be the heart of an entirely new transit system," says Cuomo.
The governor says the amount of people utilizing Penn Station is expected to double in the next 20 years.
The state, along with Amtrak, the MTA, and the LIRR, will put out the project for bid next week.
