A man who drove high and killed a man escorting veterans to MacArthur Airport was sentenced to three to nine years in prison as part of a plea deal.

Paul Porrini, of Selden, admitted to using heroin the night before he ran a red light and causing a five-car crash in Ronkonkoma last September.

The crash killed motorcyclist Christopher White, of Medford. White, who was a member of the group "Boots on the Ground," was escorting elderly veterans to the airport.

Before sentencing, White's loved ones had the opportunity to address the judge about what they lost during the fatal crash.

"Half of my heart went to heaven on Sept. 28," said White's wife, Dottie.

"I didn't want a daddy angel. I wanted daddy real," said their 4-year-old son, Ryan. "If I had superpowers, I would go to heaven to visit him."

Porrini apologized in court to White's family and friends.

The judge told the court that he may issue a recommendation to the parole board that Porrini serve "every second of the maximum penalty being imposed."
