Hundreds of parents and students packed a Board of Education meeting in Freeport Wednesday to discuss the student brawls that erupted over the past week.
Police said an investigation into the events of Friday and Monday is ongoing. Authorities said the fighting at Freeport High School began Friday during lunch when a food fight boiled over into a brawl outside the school. A video of the fight ended up on YouTube. More than a dozen students were arrested after fighting broke out again Monday and seven students were suspended.
Parents, teachers and board members expressed concern about the events and the need for more security. The board assured parents that the students' safety is the district?s first priority.
One student addressing the audience said the school security guards need to be more proactive and aware of what kind of trouble could be brewing.
Freeport Schools Superintendent Eric Eversley says the district is working on a date for school officials to sit down with parents and discuss what should be done about the fighting.
