The removal of a crossing guard at a busy intersection outside West Hempstead High School due to budget cuts has parents of students concerned.
Co-PTA President Loraine Magaraci says students usually cross Nassau Boulevard and Johnson Lane while wearing earbuds, creating a dangerous situation.
"I understand that they are in high school, but [the students] are still at risk," says Magaraci.
Nassau police, which oversees school crossing guards, says it doesn't normally assign guards to high schools. Parents say the crosswalk is also used by many middle school students.
Superintendent John Hogan said in a statement that the district has "reached out to the Nassau County Police Department in proactive attempts to restore the [crossing guard] position."
Just two weeks ago, a 12-year-old student was killed in Elmont as she crossed a street near her school without a crossing guard.
