Parents in Baldwin are asking school officials why they weren't immediately notified after a loaded gun was found in an elementary school parking lot Monday morning.
News 12 reported that a security guard found the loaded weapon in the parking lot of Brookside Elementary.
An email was sent by the district at 6:15 p.m., nearly 10 hours after police say the gun was found. It says, "We called the appropriate authorities who secured and removed the weapon. We have no reason to believe this is related to Baldwin schools, students or staff."
"My concern was that the school was not locked down, we weren't put on notice," said one angry mother.
School district officials told News 12 in a statement that this discovery was made after all of the students were securely inside the building. Because of the ongoing police investigation, they say they waited until they had all the facts before notifying parents.
The school says the weapon did not appear to be on the property during an earlier inspection. They would not say whether any security cameras captured the incident.
Nassau police say an investigation into the weapon is ongoing and anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
