A Mineola restaurant owner gave Long Island pizza bragging rights with his recent win on an episode of "Chopped."
Rob Cervoni, the owner of Taglio Pizzeria, says he has loved making pizza ever since he was a teenager.
"What's better than making pizza on national television," Cervoni said after his victory on "Chopped."
He fell in love with Roman-styled pizza when he traveled to Rome and is now hoping to make the style more popular on Long Island.
Cervoni says he uses all-natural ingredients to make the square pizza that has light and airy dough. His ingredients include tomatoes from Italy.
He says he hopes that his victory on the TV show showed the rest of the country that Long Island has some of the best pizza.
"With Long Island pizza, we get no respect, so my job was to put Long Island on the map and Long Island pizza on the map," Cervoni says. "And I did, and I won, I represented for Long Island, and I represented for Roman-style pizza."
Cervoni won $10,000 from the "Chopped" competition. He says he is going to use that money to set up a scholarship fund to help young people who want to become future pizza makers.
