A fallen NYPD detective from Calverton will be remembered forever in one Suffolk community.
Local officials today renamed an overpass bridge in honor of Brian Simonsen. The NYPD detective was killed by friendly fire five years ago while responding to a robbery in Queens. The Halsey Manor Road bridge in Manorville will now be known as "NYPD Detective Brian P. Simonsen Memorial Bridge.
His widow Leanne tells News 12 the honor comes on what would have been Simonsen's 47th birthday.
"This dedication couldn't have happened on a more perfect day since it is his birthday he managed to get all his family and friends together not to cry but to celebrate." she said.
The overpass is between Exits 70 and 71 on the Long Island Expressway.
