Outdoor workers are trying to beat the extreme heat across Long Island.

Jason O'Donnell works as a head lifeguard at Jones Beach in Wantagh.

He says being outdoors in the extreme heat can be dangerous.

"You definitely have to keep your focus. You get tired quicker and it's really draining especially with the haze," says O'Donnell.

Doctors at Northwell Health say they've been dealing with more patients suffering from heat exposure.

"We have been seeing patients in the emergency room this past week coming down with heat illnesses. Someone had a body temperature of 107 degrees," explained Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Landscaper Salvatore Sosa, of Sayville, says he always keeps plenty of bottled water at his job sites.

He added that "the heat is crazy right now. When I finish a job, I stay in my truck for five minutes to cool off."

Doctors say watch out for the signs of heat-related illness which include excessive sweating, dizziness, weakness and nausea.
