A new order requiring shelters in New York to take in homeless people when the temperatures drop below freezing is receiving mixed reactions from homeless advocates.
On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the executive order calling for police and social services to move people into shelters during freezing weather - even those who may not want to go.
Homeless advocate Greta Guarton calls the governor's intentions good but says the problem is that shelters are already crowded. She says agencies in both Nassau and Suffolk counties are scrambling to find more room.
The executive order takes effect Tuesday. In the meantime, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless has set up a hotline for anyone wishing to help the homeless. That number is (631) 464-4314.
According to the coalition, about 200-300 people live without shelter on Long Island.
