LIPA representatives say businesses on Long Island can help make a difference when it comes to energy conservation - they simply need to close their doors.
In Southampton, well over half of the stores have the air conditioners running and the doors open. According to LIPA, the open-door policy many stores follow may not be the best.
In Southampton, Easthampton, Great Neck, Woodbury and other towns that follow the open-door policy, LIPA is launching a campaign titled ?SSYD,? or Stores - Shut Your Doors.
?People see the store so they?re going to go in if they want to go in, door open or closed,? Richard Kessel, LIPA CEO, said on Wednesday. ?I don?t think it really matters much. I think the point is that this is a huge waste of energy.?
Kessel said that there is about a 25 percent loss of energy for every business that leaves the door open.
However, many Long Island businesses have a tradition of leaving their store doors open.
?The reality of the matter is that business is business, and you do have to make sure that you get customers in and that they?re comfortable in your store,? Brad Reh, a Southampton jewelry store employee, said.
Some storeowners have been convinced. Suzanne McCooey, an employee of Maggie Moo?s ice cream parlor in Southampton, shut the door Wednesday morning. She agrees that leaving the door open is a huge waste of energy, and says it?s just as easy for customers to open the door themselves and walk in.
