Officials: Shirley man faces slew of charges for stealing dead veteran brother’s ID
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced a 30-count indictment of a man from Shirley.
Stavros Tsakonis, 60, is accused of stealing the identity of his dead half-brother, who was an Army and Vietnam War veteran, to keep working while getting disability benefits.
Officials say he stole more than $160,000 in disability benefits -- between February 2015 and January 2023.
Tsakonis is facing many felony charges, including 12 counts of identity theft and eight counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Tsakonis surrendered his passport and is due back in court on April 12.
