Camp is a go-to option for many families looking to keep their kids entertained and engaged during the summer months. Some campers have been attending the same program for years and many credit it with character building and the creation of life-long friendships.
Marshal Cohen, the chief retail analyst at Circana, says pricing out an experience that can make the break but also break the bank.
“Day camps run between $100 and $200 per week,” said Cohen. “Sleepaway camp you get a little bit of a better bargain.”
According to Cohen, those programs can run around $7,000 for three weeks and up to $13,000 for six weeks.
“The more weeks, the better the rate, so consider sending kids to camp more than just a couple of weeks at a time.”
Whether you’re choosing a camp focused on recreation, athletics or science, chances are you will need some supplies. As you shop, Cohen recommends viewing your purchases as disposable considering not everything you send your child to camp with is guaranteed to come back home with them.
“That backpack or that duffel bag that they have to take up that can cost up to $500,” he said.
If the total is too trying on your finances, more affordable camp options may be found within local schools and community centers. While the hours may be limited, the savings may still be worth it.
If your child finds adventure, connection and new-found confidence, chances are even those footing the bill will walk away happy campers.
