A fire broke out at two houses Wednesday in Bellmore, officials say.
Bellmore Fire Chief Tim Carroll says eight different departments and over 50 firefighters were needed to put out the fire on Judith Drive.
"Very labor intensive because guys can only work for 10 minutes at a time, so we had to keep rotating them in and out," Carroll says.
A neighbor named John came running to the scene when he heard screaming and yelling. He says a woman inside opened the door and didn't even know the house was on fire.
"She walked right out, but I noticed an older lady that lives with her walking up the steps, but taking a lot of time," John said.
John says he ran to get her, but the woman wanted to go back upstairs.
"I said, 'There's no time, there's no time,'" John says.
Eventually John picked up the woman and carried her outside.
The roof caved in at one of the houses, but everyone made it out safely.
