Suffolk officials have confirmed that asbestos was found in soil samples at a construction site in the Town of Central Islip.

Detectives executed a search warrant at the corner of Route 111 and Sage Street allowing environmental experts to test for evidence of toxic waste.

Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota says that LC Real Estate Group, who owns the property, may have allowed construction debris to be dumped there for almost two years.

"The level of asbestos has been tested. It's about 16 percent," he says. "Anything over 1 percent is considered hazardous."

Spota says he believes there are even more illegal dumping locations throughout the Town of Islip. He says he'll be investigating the town to see if officials knew about the dumping or ignored residents' complaints.

As News 12 has reported, DA Spota said last week he's also looking into alleged illegal dumping at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. The park is less than two miles away from the Central Islip site.
