Nassau County Police Highway Patrol Officer Michael Hyland remains in critical condition after a serious on-duty motorcycle crash Monday.

Officer Hyland was escorting a funeral procession in Lindenhurst when the incident occurred.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman described the accident as "really serious," adding that Hyland was “banged up pretty bad.”

Following the accident, Hyland was placed on life support. Despite the severity of his injuries, doctors report that his blood pressure and other vitals are currently stable.

“He really is broken head to toe,” said Dr. James Vosswinkel, a trauma specialist at Stony Brook University Hospital.

On Wednesday, 53-year-old Hyland was transferred from Good Samaritan University Hospital to Stony Brook University Hospital. The transport was a solemn moment, with members of the Nassau County Police Department lining up to salute him as he was wheeled out.

"The hospital did a great job,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. “We are going to move him to Stony Brook. Dr. Vosswinkel is out there waiting for him and he's going to treat the rest of his trauma.”

To ensure Officer Hyland’s safety during the move, a doctor from Good Samaritan joined the ambulance transport team.

“Our transport team went with one of the doctors from Good Sam because we wanted to make sure if any emergencies happen, we were fully equipped to take care of them,” explained Dr. Vosswinkel.

Though he remains on a ventilator, Hyland was surrounded by family, both personal and professional, as he made the journey to Stony Brook.

“We are a family,” said Commissioner Ryder. “When one of ours gets hurt, we stand together. We get him up and we’ll move together forward.”

Dr. Vosswinkel will now oversee Hyland’s ongoing treatment and procedures.
