NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola is one of many hospitals with new procedures in place to deal with any coronavirus cases.
The hospital gave News 12 a demonstration of the procedures using a mock patient. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus on Long Island.
The patient will go into the emergency room where they will be asked their travel history. If they have a cough, fever or any respiratory issues, they will immediately be given a mask and taken to a negative pressure isolation room.
"Then you have to go in and examine the patient and put on what's called full P.P.E, which at this point is a gown, gloves, a mask and a face shield to protect the eyes," said Dr. Audie Liametz.
The Nassau County Health Department will be called and if further tests are recommended, the patient will be given a nasal swab. That swab will then be sent to a New York State Department of Health lab in Albany.
The next step depends on the patient.
"If they're not that sick that they need to be in the hospital, it's home isolation," said Liametz. "It's like the flu. There's no vaccine right now so it is contagious and you want to keep people protected, but if you have the flu, you would stay at home so that you don't infect other people. And most people do very well."
Home isolation would last for 14 days.
Health officials say if you are sick with flu-like symptoms to call your doctor -- don't go straight to the emergency room.
NYU Winthrop also offers a virtual urgent care where patients can speak to a doctor over video chat.
