An officer shot in the face during a Brooklyntraffic stop has died, the New York Police Department saidSaturday. Russel Timshenko, 23, died at Kings County Hospital from theinjuries he suffered early Monday when he and his partner stopped astolen SUV in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood, according toPolice Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Timoshenko had been paralyzed, suffered brain swelling and wasunable to breathe on his own. His partner, Herman Yan, hit in thechest and arm but saved by his bullet-resistant vest, was releasedfrom the hospital Tuesday. Kelly said Timoshenko died while on lifesupport. "The officer passed away on his own," Kelly said. "It is avery sad day for all of us." Two suspects captured in the Pocono Mountains of northeasternPennsylvania were charged in the assault; a third man suspected ofdriving the getaway car is being held in New York.The shooting suspects had been facing charges of attempted murder. Charges were stepped up to first-degree murder after Timoshenko's death, a spokesperson from the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office says.
