Authorities say a man is dead and a woman in stable condition after a police chase turned into a police-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Crown Heights.
Detectives say a child was in the backseat of the vehicle involved in the chase.
NYPD sources say it was a 3-year-old girl.
Detectives say it all began around 3 p.m. when officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation near the Whitman Houses.
A witness told officers that the vehicle had an out-of-state license plate. Police located that vehicle on Fulton Street and Washington Avenue.

Police say then the officers began to pursue vehicle eastbound on Fulton Street and called for backup.
Detectives say the occupants of the vehicle became aware they were being followed by police and began to speed up, cutting through Bed-Stuy streets and running red lights.
The officers stopped the vehicle in traffic southbound on Utica Avenue and approached the vehicle with guns drawn and told the occupants, a female driver and male passenger, to exit with their hands in the air.
Police say the passenger exited the vehicle with a weapon and pointed it at officers, who opened fire and gave an order to drop the weapon.
The female driver then exited vehicle and tried to run away.

Police said the officers then saw a child in the back seat and removed them from the vehicle.
The female driver was caught after short foot chase, according to detectives.
Police say the female driver suffered gunshot wounds to the leg.
Officers removed the man who was shot, placed him in handcuffs and began to administer lifesaving measures, but was pronounced dead.
Detectives say the man who died, who was not identified as of Thursday evening, was wanted for a March 2024 homicide and had been on the run.
Authorities say they recovered a semiautomatic weapon with an extended clip at the scene.
The child in the back seat was not hurt, according to detectives.
The officers were also taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
