The NYPD's second-highest ranking official is retiring at the end of next month.
Rafael Pineiro joined the force in 1970 and has served as its first deputy commissioner since 2010.
Officials have not said why Pineiro is retiring, but the New York Post reports that Commissioner Bill Bratton is forcing him out. Newspaper sources say Bratton always intended to replace Pineiro.
Reporters asked Bratton about Pineiro's retirement and he responded that there has never been any bad blood between the two. "He's an exceptional individual and professional," Bratton said.
