NYC Mayor-elect Adams announces Nassau chief of detectives as NYPD police commissioner
New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams is choosing a woman from Long Island's top ranks to lead his police department.
Adams nominated Nassau County Chief of Detectives Keechant Sewell as the next NYPD commissioner.
Chief Sewell has been with the Nassau County Police Department for 22 years.
Sewell grew up in Queens and has worked in the narcotics, major cases units and as a hostage negotiator.
Sewell was promoted to chief of detectives in September 2020.
Chief Sewell will become the first woman to be the city's police commissioner.
The NYPD's PBA President Patrick Lynch says they welcome Sewell to "the second-toughest policing job in America."
Adams says that Sewell has not only the academic intelligence, but the emotional intelligence needed for the job.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says Sewell's selection is a compliment to her and the department.
