The Yaphank community is trying to come to grips with the death of a 20-year veteran NYC firefighter. FDNY Lt. Howard Carpluk, of Yaphank, and four other firefighters were trapped when the floor of a burning 99-cent store in the Bronx collapsed Sunday. Carpluk died at Montefiore Medical Center Monday. His death comes a day after the blaze claimed the life of rookie firefighter Michael Reilly, 25, of Sleepy Hollow. Carpluk leaves behind a wife and two children. Battalion Chief Thomas Auer, of Holbrook, was also injured in the blaze. He is listed in serious but stable condition. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
